Start with a bar of high carbon steel and learn the basics of material selection, forging, shaping, heat treating, and grinding. Choose to leave your handle as forged, or wrap it with natural cordage. This workshop is suitable for anyone from the beginner, to someone who has some forging skills, and wants to learn to craft a simple "brut de forge" style blade. Class size is limited to six.

Athens Forge is one of 9 chapters of the Alabama Forge Council (AFC) located in Athens Alabama. We are part of a non-profit organization that promotes the knowledge and skills of blacksmithing. Our chapter conducts meetings on the 4th Saturday of each month at Travis Fleming's Artistic Anvil Blacksmith shop located at 208 Commercial Drive, Athens, AL. Meetings consists demonstrations with plenty of experienced blacksmiths available to assist and answer questions.
BASIC BLACKSMITH COURSES
Explore all the basic skills needed to pursue the craft of blacksmithing in this introductory level class. You will learn about col fire management, hammer control and forging techniques such as drawing out, upsetting, punching, spitting and drifting metal. you can expect to complete a small project that has sample of the various techniques. Student will learn the basic understanding of the type of steel metal uses, its basic compound and durability in a variety of projects. You will learning the basics of tempering and hardening steel, basic knowledge in processes with coal as well as gas forge, and the variety of tools found in the blacksmith shop.
Class size is limited to 2 student per class.
Class is offered on Saturday or Sunday 9-2pm.

Beadology Iowa opened as Dawn’s Hide & Bead Away in 1987. In August of 2008, the store was sold to current owners Karen and Laurel Kubby.
The store is full of beads from around the world: stone, pearl, metal, organic, glass, crystal, and one-of-a-kind flamework beads. We carry jewelry findings, tools, and beadwork supplies. Custom and repair work is a staff favorite. All finished jewelry is made in house. There is an extensive class list that includes wirework, stringing, knotting, flamework, borosilicate glass work, precious metal clay, seed bead weaving, and metal work.
We pride ourselves on creating a respectful, supportive, and nonjudgemental atmosphere in which jewelry designers–from beginners to professionals–can thrive. This is done in the spirit of collaboration and community building; offering support, instruction, stellar customer service, and a quality product line.
